P.S.: I wrote this yesterday, but I didn’t hit send so pretend you’re time travelling and today is Friday and you just got a letter from Mel.
It’s 5:40 pm and I’m still at work. I’m downloading movies to binge-watch this weekend but the network is pretty bad and it’s the only thing stopping me from closing my laptop and heading home. This week was a good week, my line manager quit to focus on personal things and I had to continue running solo as a marketing team, but I handled it well. At least the week ended with my boss’s acknowledgement of what I do. In his words, “Thank you for all you do Melody”.
Oh, happy New Month! I didn’t forget to write to you, I just wasn’t sure of my drafts but as I was on my way to work in my yellow limousine(keke), I thought about how nice it is to use a yellow limo on days I can’t afford an Uber, and it made me thankful for alternatives that exist over the actual things we want.
"We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures." - Thornton Wilder
I’m grateful for Facetime when I miss my people and wish I could see them, grateful for online service on days I can’t physically make it, thankful for concoction rice on days I can’t go all out and make proper jollof rice, grateful for chicken republic ice cream when I need the comfort of ice cream but Cold stone is a far reach, grateful for rain on nights when the heat is unbearable and the neps? oh well, let’s just leave them out of this. I'm grateful I can buy amala when I crave it, grateful for Youtube home workouts when I’m too busy to go to the gym, I might not know how to do my makeup, but I’m thankful I can apply mascara, eyeliner and lipgloss, thankful for the smell of coming rain and black coffee. Grateful that workspaces exist and I don’t have to stay home feeling isolated in the name of remote work, grateful that I can download trending movies on ‘tfpdl or rotten tomatoes’ and skip the whole cinema drama. I am also grateful that I can go to the cinema when I need to see a movie on a large screen and not on my laptop or my 6.78-inch smartphone. I am grateful for times when my insufficient bank balance stopped me from recharging my phone with 20,000 when I meant to type 2,000. Thankful for the gift of being able to express through words on ink, what my lips couldn't say. Thankful for every one of you who reads my newsletter and tells me how good or bad I’m doing. Someday soon, you’ll get exclusive access to my first book.
This month, I hope you constantly find yourself being grateful for everything and even if it’s not what you want yet, I hope you remain grateful for the alternatives God provides you with.
Welcome back to Saturday. It’s my mom’s birthday tomorrow and she’s one of my biggest and loudest supporters. She likes cute messages and I’d love it if you could write something nice to her that makes her feel warm. You could send it in an email to me and I’d forward it. Thank you.
All my love always, Mel.
So grateful for this great gift of a daughter
